A Certain Slant of ‘Twilight’
Thursday, October 6th, 2011Reviewer Says Dragon Chica Succeeds at Every Level
Monday, January 3rd, 2011Walter Mason, Australian author of Destination Saigon and a man of obvious good taste, recently posted a rave review of May-lee Chai’s DRAGON CHICA on his blog! He calls it “a beautifully nuanced work of enormous appeal.” He goes on to say, “Dragon Chica is a beautifully written, clever and perfectly crafted novel, one that succeeds at every level without ever falling into the embarrassing and cringe-making didacticism that can frequently plague the ‘issues’ novel, particularly one directed at young people. Chai speaks perfectly to her young readers, trusting in their intelligence, their sensitivity and their great desire for subtlety.”
After saying many, many more nice things, Mason concludes by declaring, “I adored this book, and would recommend it to any young person, particularly those with an interest in Asia and the Asian immigrant experience. May-lee Chai deserves to be better known in Australia, and Dragon Chica is the kind of book that almost any young Australian could indentify with.” We couldn’t agree more!

They Found It Quite Fetching
Monday, February 9th, 2009The Bulletin has some kind words for Laura Whimtcomb’s latest novel, THE FETCH:
Whitcomb’s writing is clear and thoughtful, and she makes elegant sense of this unusual and original plot. Though the real-life connections certainly add to the story’s intrigue, the quasi-historical subplot is really secondary to Calder’s own absorbing journey and his introspection about his past life, his work as a Fetch, and his possible future with Ana in Heaven. The title’s genre-crossing nature will make it appealing to fans of several different categories: supernatural stories, mysteries, hisrorical fitrion, and/or romance.

Whitcomb’s unique new book is a fascinating, intricately structured vision of the afterlife….The rich descriptions, particularly of the exquisitely imagined afterlife, are exceptionally drawn, as are the sympathetic characters and the unusual premise.
