Recently-elected President Monroe, controversial, divisive, and populist, is at the center of an increasingly polarized Washington, D.C. Never has the partisan drama been so tense or paranoia so rampant. In the midst of these contentious political turf wars, the White House Chief of Staff is found dead in his house. A single clue, discovered by the man's tenacious intern, suggests he died from something other than natural causes. There is evidence of a wide-ranging conspiracy running beneath the surface of everyday events: powerful government figures are united in their effort to undermine the rule of law and democracy itself. Soon, allies are exposed as enemies, once-dependable authorities fall under suspicion, and no one seems to be who they say they are. The unthinkable is happening. The Deep State is real. Who will die to keep its secrets? Who will kill to uncover the truth?
A timely political thriller...one of the more surprising double-reverse plot twists I have seen in some time. Almost better than the plot are Hauty’s sometimes jarring, but always entertaining, asides about the fates of ancillary characters — we get to hear how some of them will die, years later — and the petty viciousness of office politics.
A refreshing change from the typical male action hero, Hayley is a capable, kick-ass, and sharp woman from unassuming roots.
Hayley Chill is no ordinary intern: She comes to the job from the military, after life experiences more varied than her companion interns, and is more self-possessed and focused than they are...Cute and savvy as a Swiss Army knife, there's nothing she cannot accomplish.
Deep State is a compelling page-turner with an unpredictable last-minute twist that will knock you off your feet.
Screenwriter Chris Hauty’s talents are on full display in his terrific debut, Deep State, a crackling and perfectly timed political thriller...The difference maker here is the pitch-perfect development and depiction of Haley Chill who is anything but what her last name represents. She’s a stellar series hero in the making and here’s hoping Deep State is only the first time we see her.
This is an edge-of-your-seat, fast-paced, jarring, intriguing, kick-ass thriller, perfectly placed in the current American political climate, which will keep you turning pages into the night until you reach the shocking wrap-around prologue/ending...As political thrillers go, this is up with the very best. It marks Hauty as a name to look out for – and we must hope that he is not as accurate a prophet as he is skilled an author!
Deep State is the debut novel from author Chris Hauty and what a great debut it is. He has written the first great thriller of the new year. It starts off strong with great character in Hayley Chill and never lets up, leading up to a climatic showdown and a twist you never see coming. I have been reading these type of books for years and very rarely am I left surprised by a twist. Kudos to Chris for this.
[A] superb and timely debut thriller by a top Hollywood screenwriter.
There is no problem finding action in the story, and the words flow keeping the reader glued to the pages awaiting the outcome. The ending is not telegraphed at all, but is quite satisfying and will do its part in Hauty’s readers coming back for more.
DEEP STATE is a terrific entry in the thriller game — featuring a feisty new protagonist in Hayley Chill. With a hair-raising twist in the final pages, Hauty proves a capable craftsman who will have readers thirsting for more.
C.J. Box, #1 New York Times Bestselling Author of WOLF PACK and THE BITTERROOTS:
DEEP STATE is a propulsive, page-turning, compelling, fragmentation grenade of a debut thriller.
Jack Carr, former Navy SEAL and author of THE TERMINAL LIST and TRUE BELIEVER:
The plot of Chris Hauty’s DEEP STATE rings eerily true in a novel that will keep you turning the pages well into the night. Be warned, you might not look at newspaper headlines the same way come morning. In a country with a government of the people, by the people and for the people, is the Deep State really pulling the strings?
Kyle Mills, bestselling author of RED WAR and ENEMY OF THE STATE:
Hauty provides a fresh twist on the American patriot. Hayley Chill has what it takes to carve out her place in today’s thriller scene. She’s shrewd, fierce, and always lands the blow that puts her on top.
